In February 2004, we organized an event that confirmed man's love for their animals. Our local Stanley Cup winning hockey team, the Dallas Stars has always been kind to animals. The organization is full of animal owners and they recognize the need to support local rescue organizations. The Dallas Stars family extended their hand to us and agreed to participate in a photo shoot with some of our Labs who have Dallas Stars' inspired names. The DFW Labrador Retriever Rescue group is full of hockey fans. We support our team with the same enthusiasm that we give to rescuing Labs. The sincerest form of flattery (for us) is to name our animals after people we know or admire. We started naming all incoming male Labs after people in the Dallas Stars organization. Labs include: Arnie, Barnes, Guerin, Ludwig, Manny, Morrow, Niko, Nuggett, Otter, Pierre, Razor, Robi, Stanley, Star, Stu, Tippett, Trevor, Trick, Tugger, Turco, and Zubie. In order for this photo shoot to be a success, we needed a photographer who shared our love for animals. Enter Rego of Rego Visual Arts Studio. He approached us at Christmas-time about doing some pro-bono work for us. His photography skills run deeper than just weddings, and he was interested in trying to capture an animal's personality on film. So, on a chilly day in February, we gathered 3 Labs with Stars inspired names, 3 Ice Girls, and 1 photographer together and took some amazing pictures.

 Heather and Pierre

She has two miniature Pinschers named Zoe and Roxie. Heather recently volunteered her personal time to assist with a fund raiser for DFW Lab Rescue. Her full profile can be viewed here.

Jen and Stanley

Stanley (the dog) came from the Carrollton Animal Shelter. He was so nervous and afraid that he was at high risk for being put down. Luckily, Lab Rescue used the 'ol hot dog trick and that helped build Stanley's trust. In the beginning, he was very afraid of people and other dogs. With a lot of love and attention, Stanley became a new dog. He greets his family at the door with excitement and has found his place with the other dogs. He loves his Lab brothers and plays so gently with the old lady greyhounds. He even lets the little Jack Russell/Dalmatian Spike dominate him, which makes Spike so happy. His mom has fallen in love with the gentle kisses he likes to give and his new family can't imagine life without him.

Lauren and Turco

Turco (the dog) is about a year old. He was found wandering the country roads in Aubrey, Texas with a broken leg for over 3 weeks. He was taken to a local vet who called and ask us if we could take him into our program. His 4 surgeries and medications were donated by Dr. Paul Dean. He is 100% healed, has a great attitude, and has turned into quite a looker with the ladies! Nothing stops him from chasing his new best friend Lauren around the yard, but she doesn't mind one bit!

Heather and Pierre

Pierre is about 1.5 years old and is a quite playful pup. He enjoys chasing tennis balls or birds in the back yard. On his daily neighborhood walks, he knows no strangers and gets into everything!!! The kids just adore him and he loves all of the attention he gets. The “French boy” has been a wonderful addition to the family.

The Stanley Cup, the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America,
was donated by Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby, in
1893. Today, the Cup weighs 35 pounds and stands just under three feet in height. The Cup is
the only trophy in professional sports that has the names of winning players, coaches, management
and club staff engraved on the silver chalice and the only trophy that is passed from player to
player during the off season. It is considered the most famous trophy in sports.

Lauren and Turco

Marty Turco (the player) made his NHL debut for the Dallas Stars on Oct. 10, 2000 at Carolina and played 26 games that year. In 2001-02, he became the starter for team, and finished the season with the League's best save percentage (.925) and lowest GAA (1.90). In 2002-03, Turco had the best GAA in league history since World War II at 1.72, shattering the former record of 1.77 by both Tony Esposito in 1971-72 and Al Rollins in 1950-51. He made his first NHL All-Star appearance the same year. In 2003-04, Turco again played in the All-Star game and finished the season with a 1.98 GAA.

Heather and Pierre

Pierre Turgeon (the player) was signed by Dallas in 2001. Pierre was hampered by injuries and limited to a mere 66 and 65 games in his first two seasons with Dallas. Although injuries have hampered Pierre's offensive totals, he registered his 1200th NHL point with an assist on Nov. 12, 2002, becoming just the 37th player in league history to reach that milestone. 2003-04 started out slow for Pierre, but he was excellent down the stretch and often provided critical offense from behind the goal. He led the team with four points in the playoffs.
